Queen Mary

There have been several British ships called Queen Mary over the years, but probably the most famous Queen Mary was the luxury liner that was launched in 1934. The Queen Mary was originally built for the run from England to New York, but it experienced drama right from the very beginning of its existence when it nearly capsized as it was being led down the ramp and into its port. From there, the Queen Mary enjoyed a full career as one of the most famous British cruise ships ever. It offered supreme luxury for first class passengers with an indoor swimming pool and full library, and the main dining room was a three-story tall wonder that served hundreds of people a day. In this way, the Kreuzfahrt mit der Queen Mary very special.

The Queen Mary is also famous for doing its part during World War II. The cruise ship was converted into a troopship, and was able to carry thousands of troops to locations all over the world. On one occasion, the Queen Mary was carrying over 16,000 American troops when it was hit broadside by a nearly 100 foot tall wave. The Queen Mary came within a few inches of capsizing, but she held her own and managed to avoid catastrophe. The story was immortalized in the fictional tale The Poseidon Adventure, and the Queen Mary even had a role in the movie as the SS Poseidon.

After World War II the Queen Mary was turned back into a cruise ship, and she enjoyed two more decades of useful service before being retired from transcontinental runs in 1967. Today the Queen Mary is permanently docked in Long Beach , California where it serves as a museum to its own glorious past, and as a hotel for visitors that would like to know what it feels like to spend the night in one of the original luxury cruise ships.
